How to Refill

No office is complete without a printer, and no printer can work without ink. Unfortunately, printer ink is very expensive. Luckily, there is a way to refill your print cartridge as opposed to purchasing a new one, which should save you hundreds of dollars. For starters, you will want to buy an ink refill kit at a nearby office store or at an online retailer. Once you have a kit, make sure you have a roll of paper towels, some scotch tape, and a clean working area. You will also want a pair of disposable gloves. Remove the empty cartridge from your printer, and place the empty cartridge on the paper towel. You may want to read the instruction manual that comes with the refill kit before you begin. Find the fill holes on the top of the cartridge, and, with a sharp pencil, pierce the refill holes. Follow the kit instructions so you know which hole to insert each specific color. Slowly add the ink, and take care to make sure you do not over-fill. Once you see a bit of ink coming out of the hole, it is time to stop. Cover the hole with a small piece of scotch tape, and make sure no ink is leaking out of the top. Repeat the steps for each color, and carefully blot the cartridge print head on a piece of paper towel. Once you are absolutely sure that the cartridge is sealed and not leaking, you can then replace the ink cartridge into the printer. You should print something right away to get the ink flowing, using multiple colors if you can. Your printer will have a cleaning or priming cycle that you can follow to make sure the ink is working properly.

Best Brands & Cost

Kodak’s ink remains one of the best deals on the market, regardless of the printer you have. The cost of black ink works out to about 3 cents per page, while the color ink costs around 10 cents per page. These are well below the average, although Kodak isn’t perfect. Some people have complained that Kodak ink is low quality. HP is another popular brand of ink. Although it is more expensive than Kodak, it is right around the standard cost of ink. Dell, on the other hand, produces some of the priciest inks on the market, but at the same time, some of the best reviewed inks available. In order to find the best deal, you need to decide what you are printing. If you are working in an office environment where memos and other documents are printed throughout the day, you will want to go with a cheaper ink because the quality isn’t as important, and you will need to replace it more frequently. If you are printing important legal documents, however, you may want to choose a better quality ink. Obviously, if you are working in the photography business or some sort of design job, you want to make sure you have one of the best quality inks available, regardless of cost.
